My long overdue report on The Grammys

The 52nd annual GRAMMYS

The Grammys this year were really fun to watch. Everyone looked polished and the performances were exciting. There were lots of things to talk about so here are the things that stood out for me.

RED CARPET

During the Red Carpet, I hardly saw any real fashion messes. The people who really stood out in that department were Ciara and Kesha.

Ciara’s outfit was by far the worst I think I’ve ever seen her wear. What seemed to be a beautiful lacy dress was covered by this weird penguin tailed blazer made out of like….what?…rope? . With Gems!! Ugh! How could she?   And then…I realized that lacy dress she was obstructing was actually a pantsuit! Oh Hell no! Violation!!

That was the worse thing I remembered seeing on the red carpet.

Then there’s Kesha or um…sorry Ke$ha. Her hair was a bit messy for the dress in my opinion.

And yeah…I get it. You’re going to be wearing a feather and a glittery star or whatnot on your one eye…it didn’t work with the dress she was wearing. On top of that, she pairs her shimmery gold metal fringe dress…with what looked like suede brown open toe shoes?  No good.

Good Looks

Ok now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, we can move on to the looks I thought were great.

I really liked Pink’s dress.

I thought it was cute. I loved the color and the way it faded in the dress.  She look very beautiful for the awards.

Fergie’s dress was cute but still very dressy and appropriate for the Grammys.

She looked fantastic in that color!

Katy Perry looked very pretty as well. That backless part was SEXY!!

You go girl!

That added just the right amount of edge to the dress.

Rihanna looked so gorgeous. I loved the all white and the feathers. I loved it because the whole feather thing is still out of the ordinary but it was done in a soft way. To me she can do no wrong .

Country Singers Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood looked great as well. I like to see Taylor with her hair  tied up more as opposed to those weird ringlets she wears and her dress was very pretty. I loved the sparkle.

And despite the fact that Carrie’s dress looked a bit wrapped around in a weird way, She still looked very polished which I can appreciate.

TREND

I noticed there were a lot of neutral colors and more sand, beige around than other years. A lot of the celebrities I can remember were wearing dresses in those colors.

Keri Hilson

Beyonce

Katy Perry

and Ashanti were all wearing sandy/beige/nude.

I do have to say that Beyonce’s dress at the Red Carpet was a bit questionable. I felt the dress had a lot going on with those designs. Thankfully the dress fit so well on her that it was admissible. Her hair looked great.

I noticed the shimmery, glittery hairpieces she was wearing. Though I felt it was much with the dress I still appreciated it. I especially appreciated it because I was thinking of doing something like that so yay!! Someone has it on! LOL

Lady GAGA was doing her thing. I actually thought it was cool. I liked the hair. I especially liked the shoes.

If I had money I would probably attempt to wear those out….obviously not with that outfit.

Oh and Jennifer Hudson looked Very Nice.

And I gotta say Thankfully Haley from Paramore wore something nice. I don’t remember which year it was but …she wore these weird socks with her dress and it completely ruined her dress. But I am so glad that she improved. The band looked great.

PERFORMANCES

The show started off with a Lady GaGa Medley and her performance was fun and out there as usual.

The stage was set as some kind of factory where they discarded her into this disposal that results in her coming out with Elton John, both dusty and playing piano decorated with arms.

She got a bit crazy moving her head around and her glasses flew right off. But it was all good. It was cool.

Although Beyonce looked very pretty on stage, I felt her performance was a lot of noise that didn’t really make sense. In my opinion it was a big mess. She walks on stage escorted by a whole bunch of feds or special forces, very dramatically, there’s wind blowing effects, marching sounds…the whole bit.

Then she goes on to sing Beautiful Nightmare then out of nowhere proceeds to stop everything and sing Alanis Morrisette’s “Oughta Know” then proceeds to transition into one of her own songs by getting on the ground shaking like a maniac for no reason, looking frantic and then she sings…I don’t really remember what she was singing the point is…..I had a few questions after the performance was over. Questions like…What was the point of the soldiers? Why was she screaming so much? What is the relevance of “oughta know” to the set/her on stage,  How does all of this tie in?

Can anyone explain why?

If you provoke that many weird questions, you didn’t really entertain. You know who did?

The Black Eyed Peas, I enjoyed their performance a lot. I’m glad they are going in the direction they are going. I loved the costumes they had on for the performance. I’m happy to see that they’re doing this futuristic thing and they can evolve around that.

It’s a good look, sound, and vibe that definitely suits them well.

The Green Day performance was great. That is so cool that American Idiot is going to be a Broadway show. Aw man!! I can’t wait to see that…. I thought it was a great idea to introduce the cast on stage and have them perform. The cast sounded great.

Very Nice!

I LOVED PINK’S PERFORMANCE!! I loved the way she looked when she came out, I loved her bodysuit when she took the dress off. I gotta say at first I was all like “ oh boy…she’s going to do that same kind of stunt again?” Then I was like “wait let me give her a chance because she did use the stunt poetically last time. Perhaps she’ll do that again.” Said and Done, that is what she did.

The Imagery that she created while being up there all wet, relaxed, being spun around really went well with the song. It was that much more beautiful.

Damn! I’ve been sleeping on Pink’s music huh?

I’ve liked her performances lately and the songs linger for a while afterwards. Hmmm…I must hear more. She looked amazing. Her body looked amazing too. It was all a very pleasant experience.

Jamie Foxx’s performance was so much fun. They did a fun mix for the show with Slash appearing on stage doing a riff from November Rain and having it mashed with “Blame It” How cool.

It was all very grand and entertaining. Definitely one of the best performances of the night.

Then there was the Michael Jackson tribute. It was a 3D tribute which I have to look at again with my 3D glasses. It was nice and they sang one of my favorite songs from MJ “Earth Song”. I know it’s not a competition or anything and it was very well done but I kind of liked MTV ‘s tribute better. Is that wrong? Lol sorry. But still I was happy they did one even though it was just one song. It’s a given. They had to do the tribute. Very nice.

I can’t recall any other performance but …one more thing.

Jennifer Lopez

Of course, did you think I’d really forget? She looked so lovely. I think it’s the best she’s looked so far since she came back onto the scene.

She's still got it! lol

I guess that’s everything.

I don’t really focus on the nominations and who won except if I REALLY am into one particular album or a set of albums. That just wasn’t me this year.

I’m going to end it saying in my opinion, there were two disappointments that stood out, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” OVERRATED! It won a Grammy? I mean don’t they appreciate things like intricacy in composition and things like that? Was that REALLY the best song the whole year? in terms of musicality?

Then there’s Taylor Swift. I’m not all that bummed. I get why they gave it to her as opposed to another nominee. But anyways, guess who I think should’ve won both? It’s not the end of the world though because she collected some Grammys anyway so as long as they didn’t snub Lady Gaga, I’m satisfied with the awards this year.

We are approaching the 90′s (revised)

* I’ve decided that I want to tweak just a few things in this post after checking out some music. Cross outs or bold within a sentence indicate changes. So here’s the new version.

Since we just finished the first two weeks of the new year/decade do you wonder what the culture is going to be like?  We had a pretty crazy schizo decade that loved extravagance and drama in entertainment. The 80′s were beloved in the first decade of the century and rarely was anything ever deemed too much.

History repeats itself therefore I predict the fashion and music sensibilities that ruled the last decade are about to end with this new one we are entering.

In other words, the 90′s are going to be back.

The 90′s for me seemed to be the decade of going “back to the basics” but I don’t think this is going to be completely the case with the ’010 decade since the 21st century has so far proven to be what I will call the Hybrid era or Postmodern era.  Everything was mixed up and people put a new twist on the things of the past for better or worse. Youtube video commentary on events at times tend to be a great example like the merging of Kanye West VMA stunt/Obama’s healthcare address.

So here’s what I predict for the coming decade in entertainment.

2010-back to basics (sort of )

In music right now, things seem to be light and heavily dance oriented where lots of synthesizers dominate the mainstream, much like the late eighties.

If we take a look at the music shift during the 90′s , the synths either started to get darker, or if we look the other way, there were barely any synths at all. Bands like Nine Inch Nails, and R.E.M. came up to the mainstream during this time as well as Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. I think that switch will happen again eventually settling in mainstream in about a year or two  so  I can’t help but wonder….

Will there be a 21st century grunge movement?

I think Indie could be seen as 21st century grunge. This century mixes everything so I really don’t think the synths are going anywhere, just used less. Indie seems to be a movement but it is really light compared to grunge but although It reminds me of the whole “wear -whatever -be -yourself type of attitude grunge had.” To compensate for this softness, like the Nineties however, it will co-exist with Goth/Metal which may be the closest thing we’ll have to the grunge vibe and gritty sound.

Now of course I use this phrase very lightly. It’s not the Goth music people necessarily think about. This is the Millenium we are talking about so it may not be Goth music per Se, eh just more like Metal. Whatever kind of rock rises up, it will have some kind of dark, perhaps industrial, sound or influences with Goth sensibility thrown in, a darker more “real” version of what we hear now. Like a darker electro for instance that may harshly point out how vulnerable we really are as humans.

I think if this does happen it will have a  longer mainstream lifespan than grunge did in the nineties because indie and “goth-ish” music lends itself to any instrument acoustic or electrical. The genres can also get away with creating dance music for the clubs. :-)

R&B was also big during the ’90s with people like Sade, Brian McKnight, Mary J. Blige,Jon B and the Brand New Heavies so I wouldn’t be surprised to  hear some sort of R&B influence in this music as well. I can definitely imagine that happening and it actually sounds better than one would think.

Since it’s said that Fashion and music go hand in hand, there’s a few indicators that this may really happen.

Fashion has already gone dark this year. There’s almost nothing but black in the fashion shows of some of the most famous designers. Also, Dsquared has went the way of grunge with models in flannel shirts walking down the runway, Starbucks in hand.

Dsquared

Alexander McQueen

In music there are also some bands that resemble other ones in the past. Those videos I will put in another post.

Here’s one for now. :-)

Ra Ra Riot ( am I the only one who kind of gets an R.E.M. like vibe w/this song?)

Fashion Play all day

My niece showed me this website that has all these dress up games.

OMG!! It’s so much fun. I have been going crazy with it. I mean CRAZY with it.  I have made it a point to play for at least an hour a day for the past three days.

http://www.roiworld.com/fashion/dress-up-games/

This one has games based on all kinds of trends.

Project runway designs, games based on fashionable cities, some are based around shoes or season. I’m having such a good time with it, I’ve decided to display some of my “creations”. :-)

Here’s one of my creations in the “Thigh high boots” game.

and this one

This one above even had my hairstyle right now. How cool is that. lol

They even have the emo style dress up game.

And Gothic lolita style game (they call it haute horror).

I am considering joining the site. I think it’s free. I think then I can do make up. Lol :-)
